How to get people to read your blog
Yesterday, I was scouring the internet for new interesting blogs to read, since I’ve read everything on my favourite blogs’ archives. I was frustrated because I couldn’t find any new interesting blogs to read! Mind you, I wasn’t looking for informational blogs about web designing or blogging itself, but (interesting) personal blogs. While I was reading the blogs, I’ve came to conclusions; how to make me (and some others) go Zzz and tricks to get people to read your blog, and come back for more.
How to make me (and some others) go Zzz by reading your blog.
Too personal blog with unnecessary details
I’m not going to point out any site here but I just get frustrated to see that they are writing about every single thing that happened in their lives. I mean, do you really have to tell people how you have a gym class and you hate it, on every post? Do people really want to read that? I don’t know about you, but I don’t. Pointless blogs are… pointless.
Oh, I’m sorry, it’s YOUR blog. but guess what? I won’t return to your blog! ha! ha!
I even want to forget immediately that I’ve been to your blog.
Fine, it’s a personal blog. You write EVERY single thing that happen in your everyday life, every single details, including how many times you go to the toilet each day. But you are not going to get that much audience if you continue blogging like that. You might get some audience, but audience come and go. You don’t want them to go and never return, do you? If your everyday life is so hilarious and enjoyable to read, it’s totally a different story. but you know what? Good luck on that.
Too much (emo) rants
Another thing that frustrates me is that, those who rant on their blogs. Lets admit it, you don’t even want to hear your friends’ rants and now how can you expect some strangers to read your rants? I don’t think you would get more readers unless if your rants are written in such way that it is enjoyable to read. Once in a while, rantings are fine, but every single post? Zzzz…..
Then again… it’s your ranting blog. and I go, buh-bye!
updates
Oh yes, there’s another one that I can’t stand at all. On their site, it’s clearly stated that it’s a personal blog with a few contents but, when they blog, they blog about their site updates! How do you expect to get some thoughtful comments? Do I have to check your contents out? What if I think they are of non-quality contents? Should I point it out and be rude? Like I said, I was looking for some interesting blogs to read. So, if you really want to blog AND announce your updates, announce your updates on the sidebar instead.
There you go. It’s nice to let those thoughts out. Sorry if I came out too harsh. I can be a little sarcastic sometimes.
Let’s face it, all of you bloggers out there want to see your posts being read and commented. If you say you don’t care if nobody is commenting, just turn off the damn commenting! Remember, these are what make ME (and maybe some other people) yawn.
Now, moving on to point number 2. Okay. So you managed to draw some traffics to your site. The problem is, how make sure that they won’t leave your blog after reading the first paragraph of your latest entry?
Tricks to get people to read your blog and come back for more.
1. Have a neat layout
Yes, layout is important. It doesn’t have to be the best layout or a designer’s layout. It just has to be neat and readable. My eyes get really really small reading blogs with very small font size. It’s so annoying. If my eyes are good, I’ll feel good and I’ll read your whole post too. And so are others.
2. Give reasons for your visitors to come back
Updates! Update your blog as often as possible. The more you update, chances are, the more your visitors will come and check the contents out.
3. Make your posts interesting.
if your post is not really interesting, make it interesting by adding some humour and pictures. Those little things spice up your posts and make it enjoyable to read! If you make your readers cry or laugh, you are good to go.
4. Writing format matters.
Write your entries in short paragraphs. A long paragraph is harder to read since human actually scan the whole post before reading it. Some might even skip paragraphs. So, it’s crucial to paragraph your post.
Also, do not TyPe LyKe thIs or use bold, italic or varying the colours and sizes unnecessarily for every 3 to 4 words. This way, readers will only read the emphasized words and it takes more concentration to read the deemphasized words. Never use bold for your whole font. I’ve seen it and I hate it.
5. Don’t play the music automatically!
This is one thing that annoys me. I’ve seen this on many blogs. If I want to hear musics, I’ll just open up my music player. Simple. If I happen to be listening to the musics on my player and I couldn’t find a stop button anywhere in your site, I’ll just exit the blog and probably won’t return. You don’t want that, do you?
6. Ask questions.
Ask open ended questions to your readers. Make them think and when they do, they might want to leave comments so their thoughts will be heard.
7. Leave comments
If you are not doing it, you are being stupid! Leave comments on other blogs. Thoughtful ones, I mean. Commenting draws a lot of visitors to your site and get your blog commented by them. Mostly. You should always return your comments too. Don’t ever leave a comment that is irrelevant to the post entry because it is rude and you might not get your comment returned. The type of site you comment on also count. If you leave your comments on personal sites and on your blog, you talk about, say, cars or health, don’t hope too much that they’ll return your comment.
8. Keep yourself a lil’ mysterious
Letting the world know about yourself too much makes you less mysterious. (D’uh!) People are curious. As weird as this may sounds, this can get your visitors to return. They might come back and dig your posts in order to get to know you better because your interesting posts. But, if you don’t provide informations about you at all, that’s not good. I hate it when I the about page is “mysteriously gone”. Also, keep your about page original and interesting. When people think that you are an interesting person, they will definitely come back to check out your blog. Agree?
Conclusion
The conclusion is, know your target audience and work it. If you open up an educational blog, your target audience is no other than the students. If you your blog is a personal blog, your target audience might be visitors of the same country and other bloggers. and your friends. And if you are blogging about the current fashion trends and hot shopping spot, your target audience should be girls and the metrosexual guys. Get it? :)
So yeah, these are simple tips to get people to read your blog AND leave comments. And probably subscribe to your blog. I know, I’m not a blog celebrity or anything but I’m just trying to make a small change here. I want to see more quality blogs. Personal ones, especially. Don’t let your readers yawn by reading your blog.

As for me, I don’t rant everything I do, there’ll be no more privacy then if I’ll rant everything. And as much as possible I want to make my posts interesting too and not so long so that readers won’t get bored.

whoa, a top-10-list. i should give this a digg. j/k
i couldn’t agree with you more, aisyah. and i think you DO have the authority to talk, you are such an excellent personal blogger. aisyahrozi.com is my 2nd fav personal blog btw.
but sometimes, people don’t blog for audience. they blog for their personal development. they want to record what they feel, what they think, what they experience. well go get a damn diary, you say. no, blog gave some advantage over diary. though it can’t be much personal, blog makes you: 1)write a proper sentence; 2)comitted. they could care less about audience. but hey, comments are always nice. it is always nice knowing that someone, somewhere, could share you joy and pain.
as for me, i blog (the blogspot one) to repair my broken english ^^
now that you mention it, i do have an auto-music in my blogspot. it wasn’t intentional though, cause the music in the video is automatically played. indeed annoying. gotta go turn it off now, damn.

MK: hehe.. thanks for making me your 2nd fav blog? Who’s the first on your list? I’m just curious. Well, actually, I want to kill that blogger so I can be the first. LOL!
Yes, I agree with you about that MK. Like I said, they have to know their target audience. Even If they are not blogging for audience, they might actually hope that people who understand their joys and pains would read their blogs, right? I know, comments are always nice. don’t you want something nice? hence, don’t you want to get some comments?
oh, you do have it? I didn’t notice it. LOL. Maybe I muted my speaker. LOL.
Simply-Precious: frankly, some of the points apply to your site and a lot more blogs out there. and they are worse, actually. well, atleast you write your blog in such an interesting way. and no, you are not the reason why I wrote this. I just want to see more quality personal blogs. that’s all. :)

for a fact, i dont really care about get comments or visitors at my site cause the goal of my site is writing what happened in my life, that including rants and such things, but it always nice to have some others thought about it, even though its not really necessary for me… blogging also the media for me to put how i feel, think and act… its also developing my english ability since its not my native
Its okay that people dont like seeing rants blog… but for me its depend on how you actually tell it though… and if someone want to put so much details on their blog, its okay for me too… ill go read the whole blog… again… depend on how they write it down.. so i dont really fully agree with you :)
im agree with your about “blogging for site updates” i dont really see the point of it.. and yes, i hate automaticaly play music in a site! cause i like browing site with my i-tunes play and suddenly it interupted with this another song play, ussually i just leave the site lol

I agree with you on most part, except the keep yourself mysterious bit. I’m a bit confused, haha. I still feel that it’s vital to keep yourself “mysterious” as you put it, to prevent online predators… xD
And I was wondering, what do you think of my blog? Too many rants, I’m sure. Too short? I don’t know. I know this isn’t a review site, but I’d be glad if you could tell me :)
[Reply]
Wow.. This is one good article!
I think I rant too much on my blog. Why do I blog? Hmm.. I dunno. It’s just something that I’d do when I have spare time. Or to let out my feelings. Yea, they’re all personal matters. That’s why my blog contain a lot of rantings, I think? :-P I’ve been blogging since late 2003 which is like, ages ago? Back then, I blog because I was influenced by others. I didn’t have any interest in blogging. I was more attracted to graphic designing but now, neither my graphic-making skills or blogging skills ever improve. Haha..
Oh yeah. I have problem with “updating regularly”. I will only update when I feel like to. And I won’t bother updating at all when I’m busy with exams but I still do read other people’s blog and leave comments.

I have different opinion. I would rather, sepuluh kali ganda, to read personal rants than reading the so-called-wannabe-cool-blogger blogs. Example of the scwcbb is yang tulis
“Hari ini aku tidak tahu mengapa kita harus bersukan. Kamu tahu bersukan itu baik untuk kesihatan, tapi tidak untuk aku. Mungkinkah? Tidak juga.” *insert artsy fartsy photos here*
You know, that literature-type wannabe. So very the fake. IMHO, the sweetness of blogging dah berkurangan di masa sekarang. Everyone wants to be famous, everyone wants to get noticed, dan salah satu caranya, tulis konon macam buku literature. Nobody cares about the art of writing diary online anymore.
In short, to me, you just blog what you wanna blog. Losing one, two or three audiences does not mean that your blog is not good. To hell with them, they read it or not. Unless your poket atau wallet depends on it, I dont think its really wrong to write about going to gym and hate about it.
You know, that literature-type wannabe.
kdg2, bukan org sengaja mahu jadi literature-type wannabe spt ko dakwa, org menulis begitu utk memudahkan pembacaan & pemahaman… x semua org paham shortform atau languange-form yang berlainan… keseragaman adalah penyelesaian’nya…
Nobody cares about the art of writing diary online anymore.
Online diary dah mati bro, lama dah. Orang masuk internet skang utk gali maklumat.

Jack: jack, I don’t really get what you mean by cool blogger’s blog. do you think that those “cool” bloggers share the same blogging style? I agree with Ismail. using bahasa rojak in blogging narrows down your audience since not all people understands broken language. Even I, myself do not like to read blogs written with such language. other than the fact it is an such an eyesore, I’m afraid that I would misinterpret what the bloggers are trying to say.

and its really, up to you, to believe, to comprehend, to agree, to argue :)

Yes, this post is actually a rant. Except for the second topic.
I don’t rant that much in my blog. There are blogs who rant on the same thing over and over again. I’ve been to those blogs. Like I said, I was looking for interesting personal blog.
As for your blog, your blog is, frankly, a great blog. I’ve spent days reading your posts on your archives. but I havent read all of them. I wanted to save the rest for later. huhu.

Aisyah,
I believe the Word BLOG itself is solicited with ‘RANT’. e.g. MMRantings (Marina Mahathir), PaulTan (Rant on Cars), all those political bloggers. Sure is hard to find OPEN rantings. You should read “PETA”, Im sure girls like you love it.
And there’s also the personal type, they blog where went, what happened that day, todays is what day etc.
Unless you’re looking for opinion blogs, but again, opinion is part of rantings as well.
Either I’m too blur to understand, or you posted something way out of my comprehension.
I’ve always pictured blog like a type of sound system. Mono-tone, dual-tone, stereo or THX. In your case, you’d be the stereo. No unnecessary remarks and great sound variable (Ups & Downs)
I subscribe to every blog I came across and I only post a comment on the ones I like, (that’ll be dual-tone, stereo and THX only)

well said noktahhitam. i like your blog, its very rare and thought-provoking.
on the contrary, i dont comment on blog that i like
my closing opinion would be, just like what i tried to say on my previous comment; what you like, i might not like. i believe that those people who wrote about hating gym trice dont actually care about you read, comment, and come back to them blog or not. simply put, they actually know what they want to do. if they care about visitors, they would be blogging about election at the moment. or maybe akademi fantasia. or sex act of malaysian artistes.
and by saying ‘you’, is not specifically you, aisyahrozi. its general.
cheers.

and hey, bloggers; it is after all - your blog. if you find it too hard to write just because you’re afraid of the expectation, i say, damn them all ^^. just blog/rant/bitch whatever you want.
